Introduction

Jimmy Liao's Art Installation Hug Relocated to Vakangan Hot Spring Park

The installation art inspired on Jimmy Liao's picture book Hug has greeted travelers inside and outside the Chateau de Chine Hotel Hualien for over a decade. Yet due to damage sustained in the April 3 earthquake, the hotel is going to be demolished and rebuilt. After discussing with LDC Hotels & Resorts, we decided to keep the warmth of the work alive and move the installation pieces of Hug to Taitung's Vakangan Hot Spring Park in August. The red-maned lion and the boy, as well as the pink pig, white rabbit, moon, pink elephant, green frog, and teal duck will continue to welcome visitors to Eastern Taiwan with an embrace, creating yet more smiles and pleasant surprises.

Ever since its establishment, Vakangan Hot Spring Park has upheld the philosophy of protecting the land. Guided by the principle of sustainable management, it integrates the diverse applications of geothermal energy, reclaims and reuses water resources, makes dishes made with local produce, and cultivates local talent so visitors experience mutual prosperity between people and the environment as soon as they step inside the park. Large animals stand side by side with tiny humans in Jimmy Liao's Hug, expressing humility towards nature and highlighting the emotional bonds that tie creatures as we coexist together. This perfectly aligns with the philosophy of Vakangan Hot Spring Park.

In terms of spatial design, figures from the original installation work are interspersed all across Vakangan Hot Spring Park. As soon as you enter the main hall, you'll spot the little girl hugging the moon hanging on the wall. The little boy hugging the pink pig stand next to the sustainable bookshelf to keep company to visitors as they unwind and read in the hall. The red-maned lion and little boy—the protagonists of the book—welcome bathers at the entrance of the hot springs area. The pink elephant which plays on the seesaw in a corner, the teal duck which wears a floatie and relaxes by the pond, the green frog and the white rabbit are all looking over all travelers in the hot springs.

This book is a departure from previous picture books. The story is delivered through prose and contrasts the sweetness of joy against the sadness of lost.
